Dennis Hong: Making a car for blind drivers Video

Professor Dennis Hong directs the Virginia Tech College of Engineering Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory. His team took up the NFB’s Blind Driver Challenge™ in 2004. Hong spoke about the BDC in a prestigious TED Talk in March 2011.

Using robotics, laser rangefinders, GPS and smart feedback tools, Dennis Hong is building a car for drivers who are blind. It’s not a “self-driving” car, he’s careful to note, but a car in which a non-sighted driver can determine speed, proximity and route — and drive independently.
